Three ways to prepare

Find out where you stand, learn the words, and understand the exam itself.

ISEE synonyms practice

Synonyms are half of the ISEE's Verbal Reasoning section: one word, four choices, pick the closest meaning. With 20 minutes for 34 to 40 questions — about 30 seconds each — the words have to be known on sight. Try two real items from our practice bank:

Middle Level — Synonym

Choose the word that is closest in meaning to “abate” in the sentence: The storm began to abate, allowing the team to continue their journey.

  1. A intensify
  2. B diminish
  3. C prolong
  4. D disrupt
Show answer

B — diminish. “Abate” means to become less or weaker — the storm died down. Study “abate” →

Upper Level — Synonym

Which of the following words is closest in meaning to “abide”?

  1. A ignore
  2. B comply
  3. C depart
  4. D neglect
Show answer

B — comply. To “abide by” a rule is to accept it and act on it — to comply. Study “abide” →

Three ways to practice synonyms here:

  • Timed practice tests by level — synonym and sentence-completion items in the exam's four-option format, every answer explained.
  • Every word page ends with its own synonym question, next to the word's synonyms and example sentences.
  • The level pages — Primary, Lower, Middle, Upper — show what each level tests, with sample words.

ISEE vocabulary & synonyms: common questions

What are ISEE synonym questions?

Synonym questions are half of the ISEE's Verbal Reasoning section. Each gives one word — sometimes inside a short sentence — and four answer choices; you pick the choice closest in meaning. Verbal Reasoning allows 20 minutes for 34 to 40 questions, about 30 seconds each, so the words have to be known on sight rather than worked out.

How do I practice ISEE synonyms for free?

Take a timed ISEE practice test at your level — the synonym items use the exam's four-option format and every answer is explained. Then study the words you missed: each word page gives the definition, synonyms, example sentences and its own synonym question.

Are there free ISEE vocabulary flashcards?

Yes. Choose a level (Basic, Lower, Middle or Upper) and a meaning language above and you study one word at a time, flashcard-style: definition, pronunciation, example sentences, synonyms and a practice question. Mark a word Mastered to move on; progress is saved in your browser, with no account needed. The free iSEE Vocab app adds spaced repetition and syncs across devices.

Which ISEE vocabulary level should my child study?

Match the ISEE level: Lower Level for students applying to grades 5–6, Middle Level for grades 7–8, and Upper Level for grades 9–12. Basic covers foundation words below the Lower Level and is a good start for younger or newer readers. See the guides for how levels and scoring work.
