The student wants to support the claim that Jemison brought a uniquely broad range of expertise to her spaceflight. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?

  1. A Before joining NASA, Jemison worked as a physician and served in the Peace Corps in West Africa, experience she later drew on to conduct medical experiments during her spaceflight.
  2. B Jemison conducted experiments on bone cell research and motion sickness during her spaceflight.
  3. C Mae Jemison became the first Black woman to travel to space in 1992.
  4. D After leaving NASA, Jemison founded a company focused on integrating technology into daily life.

A student has collected the following notes about an inventor:

  • Marion Donovan invented an early disposable diaper cover in the late 1940s after growing frustrated with leaking cloth diapers.
  • She initially sewed a prototype using a plastic shower curtain from her own bathroom.
  • Several manufacturers rejected her invention at first, viewing disposable products as impractical.
  • She eventually sold the manufacturing rights, and disposable diaper covers became widely popular within a decade.

The student wants to explain what specific material Donovan used in her first prototype. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?

  1. A Marion Donovan invented an early disposable diaper cover in the late 1940s.
  2. B She eventually sold the manufacturing rights, and disposable diaper covers became widely popular.
  3. C She initially sewed a prototype using a plastic shower curtain from her own bathroom.
  4. D Several manufacturers rejected her invention at first, viewing disposable products as impractical.

A student has taken the following notes while researching a scientific technique:

  • Radiocarbon dating measures the decay of carbon-14, a radioactive isotope absorbed by living organisms, to estimate how long ago an organism died.
  • This differs from dendrochronology, which counts annual growth rings in wood to determine a precise calendar year.
  • Radiocarbon dating becomes less precise for samples older than about 50,000 years, since very little carbon-14 remains by that point.
  • Scientists often use both methods together, cross-referencing tree-ring data to calibrate and refine radiocarbon date estimates.

The student wants to contrast radiocarbon dating with dendrochronology. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?

  1. A Unlike dendrochronology, which counts annual growth rings for a precise calendar year, radiocarbon dating estimates age by measuring the decay of a radioactive isotope.
  2. B Radiocarbon dating becomes less precise for samples older than about 50,000 years.
  3. C Dating techniques in archaeology have advanced rapidly over the past several decades.
  4. D Scientists often use both radiocarbon dating and dendrochronology together to refine date estimates.

A student has taken the following notes about an economic policy:

  • A pilot program provided small business grants specifically to businesses owned by first-time entrepreneurs in a mid-sized city.
  • Businesses that received a grant were 40% more likely to still be operating after three years than businesses that applied but did not receive one.
  • Researchers found that grant recipients were not significantly more likely to have prior industry experience than non-recipients.
  • The program did not include any mentorship or business training component.

The student wants to summarize a surprising finding of the pilot program. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?

  1. A Despite the program including no mentorship or training component, grant recipients showed markedly higher survival rates without having more prior industry experience than non-recipients.
  2. B Businesses that received a grant were 40% more likely to still be operating after three years than businesses that applied but did not receive one.
  3. C A pilot program provided small business grants to first-time entrepreneurs in a mid-sized city.
  4. D Small business policy has been debated by economists and policymakers for decades.

A student has gathered the following notes about a geological phenomenon:

  • Fjords are long, narrow inlets with steep sides, carved by the movement of glaciers over thousands of years.
  • As a glacier moves through a valley, its immense weight and slow grinding motion carve a distinctive U-shaped channel deeper than a river could carve alone.
  • When the glacier eventually retreats and sea levels rise, ocean water floods the carved valley, forming a fjord.
  • Norway, Chile, and New Zealand are among the regions with prominent fjord coastlines today.

The student wants to explain the underlying process that creates a fjord. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?

  1. A Glaciers carve valleys deeper than rivers can carve on their own.
  2. B A glacier's weight and grinding motion carve a deep U-shaped valley, which becomes a fjord when the glacier retreats and rising sea levels flood the carved channel.
  3. C Norway, Chile, and New Zealand are among the regions with prominent fjord coastlines today.
  4. D Fjords are long, narrow inlets with steep sides found in several coastal regions.

A student has taken the following notes about a scientific instrument:

  • The James Webb Space Telescope observes primarily in infrared light, unlike its predecessor, the Hubble Space Telescope, which observes mainly in visible and ultraviolet light.
  • Infrared light can pass through clouds of cosmic dust that block visible light.
  • This allows Webb to observe the formation of stars and planets inside dust clouds that Hubble could not see through.
  • Webb orbits much farther from Earth than Hubble does, to keep its instruments extremely cold.

The student wants to explain why Webb can observe objects that Hubble cannot. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?

  1. A Because infrared light can pass through cosmic dust clouds that block visible light, Webb can observe star and planet formation that Hubble's visible-light instruments cannot detect.
  2. B Webb orbits much farther from Earth than Hubble does, to keep its instruments extremely cold.
  3. C The James Webb Space Telescope observes primarily in infrared light, unlike Hubble, which observes mainly visible and ultraviolet light.
  4. D Hubble observes mainly in visible and ultraviolet light.

  • However, sustainability-focused marketing campaigns by these companies have grown significantly, even though sustainability is a less commonly cited motivator among shoppers themselves.
  • Industry analysts note a gap between how these marketplaces are marketed and why consumers actually use them.

The student wants to highlight a mismatch identified by industry analysts. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?

  1. A Surveys show that cost savings are the most commonly cited reason shoppers give for using these marketplaces.
  2. B Online secondhand clothing marketplaces have grown rapidly over the past decade.
  3. C Industry analysts study consumer behavior across many different retail sectors.
  4. D Even though sustainability is a less commonly cited motivator among shoppers, these marketplaces have significantly increased sustainability-focused marketing, revealing a gap analysts have identified between marketing and actual consumer motivation.

Rhetorical Synthesis Drill 2 FAQ

Are these real, previously administered SAT questions?

No. Every question here is original, written to the College Board's published Digital SAT Reading & Writing specification for the Rhetorical Synthesis skill. No retired or copyrighted College Board material appears anywhere on this site.

What does the Rhetorical Synthesis question type actually test?

Rhetorical Synthesis gives you a set of bulleted research notes and a sentence stating what the student wants to accomplish — emphasise a contrast, introduce the subject to an unfamiliar audience, explain why the finding matters. The correct choice uses the notes to accomplish exactly that goal.

How should I approach Rhetorical Synthesis questions?

The goal sentence is the entire question. Read it, then read it again, and hold it while you evaluate the choices — the notes themselves barely need studying up front. Every choice will be factually consistent with the notes; you are choosing on purpose, not on accuracy.

Is Rhetorical Synthesis Drill 2 the same length as a real SAT module?

No, and deliberately so. This drill is 10 Rhetorical Synthesis questions back to back; a real Reading & Writing module is 27 questions in 32 minutes drawn from all eleven skills. Use a drill to fix one weakness, then take a full module to practice the real thing.

Does guessing hurt my SAT score?

No. The SAT has no penalty for a wrong answer — a blank and a wrong guess both score zero — so answer every question, including the ones you have to guess.
